Dover, DE : Man and woman injured in motorcycle crash on Route 1 near Smyrna on Sunday night, August 7, 2016

Delaware State Police are investigating a motorcycle crash on Route 1 just north of Smyrna in which two people were injured Sunday night.

The crash happened at about 8 p.m., as James E. Smith, 53, of Dover, was driving a 2007 Honda VTX1300R motorcycle south on Route 1 in the right lane. Due to an apparent mechanical malfunction, Smith lost control of the motorcycle and both he and the passenger were thrown to the ground.

Smith was taken by emergency medical services personnel to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where he was treated for undetermined non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The passenger, his sister, Kimberly Smith, 51, of Dover, was airlifted by the State Police helicopter to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital. After advanced lifesaving efforts by paramedics, she was admitted in critical condition.

Police are continuing their investigation into this incident.

Route 1 at exit 119 was closed for about three-and-a-half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
