Texarkana, TX : Mount Pleasant woman dead and her husband injured after a motorcycle crash on Interstate 49 south near Blackman Ferry Road early Saturday, April 23, 2016

A Mount Pleasant, Texas, woman is dead and her husband left injured after an early morning motorcycle crash caused by a tire blowout on Interstate 49 south near Blackman Ferry Road.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at about 1:45 a.m. as the couple traveled Interstate 49 toward Shreveport.

Jennifer Vandenberg, 38, of Mount Pleasant was riding as passenger on a 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by her 37-year-old husband, Vernon Vandenberg.

The couple were close to mile marker 27, near the Blackman Ferry Road exit, said Cpl. Kristi Bennett, TAPD spokeswoman.

A tire blowout caused Vernon Vandenberg to lose control of the motorcycle, which overturned.

Jennifer Vandenberg was pronounced dead at the scene, and her husband was taken to CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System for treatment of unknown injuries.

Police said the Vandenbergs were both wearing helmets, but Jennifer's helmet came off at the time of the accident.

"It is sad. Very, very sad," Bennett said.

Other southbound traffic on the interstate was diverted onto U.S. Highway 71 while first responders worked the scene of the accident.
