Alexander,ND : Head-on collision with semi on I-94 leaves car a total loss on September, Friday 22th 2017

A car with an infant and toddler in tow was totaled in a head-on collision with a semi truck Friday evening, Sept. 22.

Around 6:30 p.m., a westbound silver Nissan Sentra driven by 36-year-old Alicia Smith, of West Fargo, was on the two-lane ramp in West Fargo where Main Avenue transitions into Interstate 94 East when it collided with the semi.

Smith had her two children, a 6-month-old and 5 year-old, secured in the back seat at the time of the crash. The children had to be extricated and the family was taken to the hospital, said Josh Page with the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Page said the children were OK and Smith suffered minor injuries, mainly cuts. The semi driver, Jeffrey Linnertz, of Fargo, had no reported injuries. Before the F-M Ambulance arrived, Page said a trauma surgeon and nurse who happened to be driving in the area at the time of the crash stopped to assist.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but Page said Smith crossed over the centerline into the eastbound lane. Linnertz braked and steered away from the Nissan to avoid the crash, but Smith still struck the semi nearly head on, Page said.

There was some damage to the front end of the semi and the Nissan is a total loss, Page said.
