Wreck on I-44 at U.S. 65 interchange killed man from Marshfield

A man from Marshfield died in a rollover crash at the Interstate 44/U.S. 65 interchange in northeast Springfield early Tuesday.

Springfield police say Justin L. Scherpinsky, 20, died of injuries from the crash.


He was a passenger.The driver, Tate Mueller, 18, was westbound on the interstate when he lost control on the northbound U.S. 65 exit ramp, causing the car to flip and land on its top.

Police say Mueller may have swerved to avoid hitting a car that was parked alongside the road.

Scherpinsky died at the scene. Mueller was treated and released.


Investigators spent hours reconstructing the crash site to try to understand what occurred. Police havenot said whether alcohol played a part in the accident.
