A rural intersection in northwestern Ohio where a van carrying a high school water polo team hit a semitrailer on Friday was the site of another deadly accident earlier in the week.

Both crashes happened after drivers stopped at a stop sign and then pulled into traffic, said the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the team van failed to yield at the intersection, killing her 19-year-old daughter who was a former member of the team from Worthington Kilbourne High School in suburban Columbus, according the sheriff’s office.

Vicki Fisher, 45, and her two daughters, 17-year-old Betsey Fisher and 14-year-old Melanie Fisher, and 15-year-old Samantha Fink and 14-year-old Sydney Zullich suffered what the the sheriff’s office described as “life-threatening” injuries.

Betsey Fisher, Samantha Fink and Sydney Zullich were in critical condition at a Toledo hospital on Friday.

There was no update available on their condition or the others on Saturday.

Courtney Fisher died at the scene. She was listed as a sophomore at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and a member of its water polo team.

She was captain of both the water polo and swim teams during her senior year at Worthington Kilbourne, said Mike Weirick, a senior at the school.

She set a great example for younger students, he said, and deeply valued her Christian faith. “She was one of the most selfless people I’ve ever met,” Weirick told The Columbus Dispatch.

The team was traveling to a water polo tournament in Napoleon.

The crash happened outside Napoleon, southeast of Toledo, where on Monday, a delivery truck driver was killed at the same intersection after a pick-up truck driver stopped and then pulled out into the other vehicle’s path, The Blade in Toledo reported.

Daniel Holt, 37, of Maumee died in that crash.
