Jacksonville, NC : 89-year-old man in critical condition after motorcycle crash in Richlands on Tuesday, August 2, 2016

An 89-year-old man is in critical condition after being hit while on his motorcycle in Richlands.

Hollingsworth Marshburn, 89, of Richlands pulled over to get the mail across the street from his home around 11:51 a.m. Tuesday when he attempted to make a left into his driveway and was struck by a 1991 Chevrolet Camaro, said Highway Patrol Trooper M.T. Bryan.

Marshburn was at 229 Turtle Shell Road at the time of the crash and was riding a cruiser style 2007 Yamaha motorcycle, Bryan said.

The Camaro, driven by Nathan Jones, 19, of Richlands, crashed into the left side of Marshburn with the front right bumper of the Camaro, Bryan said.

“(Marshburn) failed to yield the right of way and pulled back onto Turtle Shell Road in front of Mr. Jones,” he said.

Marshburn was flown to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he is in critical condition, Bryan said. Jones was not injured.

No charges have been filed against Marshburn at this time, Bryan said, and his condition will determine whether charges are filed in the future.

“We’re just waiting to see what the medical report is going to be, if he pulls through or if he doesn’t make it,” he said.
