Oroville,CA : Man killed in east Oroville crash is identified on September, Tuesday 12th 2017

The man killed in a head-on crash Tuesday afternoon near Lakeside Market and Gas in east Oroville has been identified.

The Butte County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday he is Harry Whitley, 52, of Oroville.

The crash happened about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, when Whitley was westbound on Highway 162 in a 1973 Volkswagen Beetle and approaching the intersection with Kelly Ridge Road.

At the same time a 1995 Jeep Cherokee driven by Megan Page, 29, of Oroville was stopped at a traffic signal at the intersection waiting to make a left turn toward Kelly Ridge Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Page then began to make a left turn and drove into the path of Whitley’s Volkswagen, according to the CHP.

The two cars collided head on. Whitley died at the scene.

Page suffered minor injuries and was taken to Oroville Hospital.

Whether drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the crash remained under investigation.

A CHP officer at the scene Tuesday said it was not immediately clear who was at fault for the crash.

The officer said Page told investigators she began making a left turn under a protected green light.

Witnesses at the scene, however, told officers Page may have begun turning against a red light, the officer said.

The crash remained under investigation.
