A Topsail High School student was seriously injured in a two-car wreck Monday morning.
According to Trooper Wilson with the State Highway Patrol, 16-year-old Rachel Kapiko was turning left from US 17 onto Sloop Point Road at 8:20 a.m. when a driver heading the opposite direction on US 17 ran through a red
light and hit her vehicle on the driver’s side.
Kapiko was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle told troopers her vehicle was having mechanical issues, and that she was looking at gauges on her dashboard when she ran the light. She was taken to NHRMC North on Scotts Hill Medical Drive
with minor injuries.
Wilson said charges are pending in the wreck.
