Polk County, CA : 12-year-old Plant City boy killed after crash in Polk County on Sunday, 31st January 2021

A 12-year-old boy from Plant City died after the car he was riding in drove in front of another car in Polk County and was struck by a driver who was under the influence of alcohol, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Joel Orozco, 12, was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital Tampa where he died, according to the sheriff’s office. The crash resulted in injuries for all four people involved, including two other people in Orozco’s car and the driver of the other vehicle, Mario Martinez Salazar.

At about 12:22 a.m on Sunday, Martinez, 30, was driving west on State Road 60 in Mulberry. Andres Orozco, 42, was traveling south on Coronet Road when he drove into the path of Martinez’s car, which had the right of way, according to the sheriff’s office.

None of the occupants of Orozco’s car were wearing seatbelts. Andres Orozco and Joel Orozco were both ejected. Andres Orozco, of Wauchula, was taken to Lakeland Regional Health where he remains in critical condition with severe head trauma, a broken neck and a broken leg, according to the sheriff’s office.

Bystanders pulled out 14-year-old Angel Orozco of Plant City, who was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital and treated for a broken collarbone and a brain bleed. He has been released.
