WOODWARD, OK : Parents of the children involved in a deadly crash in Woodward on Tuesday, August 8, 2017

Parents of the children involved in a deadly crash in Woodward say they are beyond devastated and hurt.

“Katana (Richey) was a joy in all of us,” mother Shyila Clugston said. “No matter what, she will always be our joy.”That’s the feeling Katana’s mother and father are desperately trying to hold on to after she and two other teenagers died early Wednesday during a police pursuit that ended in a crash.

“She loved life. She loved everybody. She always smiled,” Clugston said.

Jason Richey said his daughter sneaked out of his house and met up with others teenagers at a local Walmart. From there, the driver, Katana and three of their friends -- all 14 and younger -- hit the road.

Police tried to pull them over for a traffic violation, but the driver didn’t stop.

“He said he was scared,” said April Carman, mother of the driver. “(He) didn’t mean to miss the stoplight, and he was so scared. (He) didn’t want to get locked up.”

The teenage driver is now being held in police custody and was in court Wednesday. His mother said he has a troubled past, which likely was the reason he didn’t stop the car.
