Liberal, KS : Oklahoma mother, daughter killed in a head-on collision near Liberal on Sunday afternoon, June 1, 2014

An Oklahoma woman and her teenage daughter died from injuries sustained Sunday afternoon in a head-on collision near Liberal, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol accident report.

Gabriela Cano, 32, and Evelin Cano, 14, died shortly after the accident on U.S. 83 about 15 miles north of Liberal, the report said. Both were from Hooker, Okla.

Gabriela’s 10-year-old daughter also was injured in the crash, a KHP spokesman said. Her condition was unknown.

Travis Ryan Burgess, 31, of Turpin, Okla., was driving a 2011 Ford truck south on the highway shortly before 3 p.m. when it crossed over the center line. Gabriela Cano was driving a 1994 Oldsmobile north and attempted to avoid the truck by swerving into the southbound lane, the report said.

But the truck swerved back into its original lane and hit the Oldsmobile head on, the report said.

Burgess was taken to the hospital with possible injuries, according to the report.
