Several streets were closed for nearly four hours Monday and a coffeehouse was evacuated after a vehicle struck a barrier and a police car near the Capitol, according to authorities.

Police used explosives to open the vehicle’s trunk and, after a long investigation that disrupted traffic, determined that there was nothing suspicious inside.

The spokeswoman said he has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, felony assault on a police officer, aggravated reckless driving and driving without a permit.

The incident occurred about 11:45 a.m. at Independence Avenue and Second Street SE. All roads except Independence Avenue between Second and Third streets reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Authorities said a Capitol Police officer was slightly injured in the crash and was treated and released at a hospital for treatment.
