Beaufort, SC : St. Helena Island woman died in a single-vehicle crash on Saturday at Airport Circle and U.S. 21 in Beaufort on July 26, 2014

A fatal car crash is under investigation in the Lowcountry.

A St. Helena Island woman, Ebony Jenkins, 25, died after a single vehicle collision took place around 1 a.m. Saturday at Airport Circle and U.S. 21 in Beaufort.

The 1994 Honda Accord was traveling south when it ran off the road striking a pole and overturning in a marsh.

Jenkins was a passenger and was thrown from the vehicle and died. The driver of the car, Joseph Smalls, 29, was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries, according to Senior South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Hannah Wimberly.

Investigators say neither Jenkins nor Smalls were wearing seatbelts at the time.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol's MAIT team continues to investigate.
