Norfolk, VA : Nine people injured in HRT bus crash in Virginia Beach on Friday, August 19, 2016

Nine people went to the hospital Friday after a Hampton Roads Transit bus collided with a sport utility vehicle.

The crash happened about 1 p.m. on the 2700 block of Princess Anne Road, said Tom Holden, an HRT spokesman.

The route 33 bus was heading south on Princess Anne Road when the driver steered off the road to avoid hitting cars that had quickly stopped to wait for an SUV to turn into a driveway, Holden said.

The bus swerved into the grass, onto a bike path and then smashed into the SUV's passenger side.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital, Holden said. HRT is not sure how severely the nine people were injured, he added.

The speed limit slows from 55 to 45 mph at that location. Holden said the bus' speed is recorded on a tape located inside, but that evidence was turned over to police and HRT has not yet reviewed it.
