Valdese, NC : Woman arrested in fatal hit-and-run in Burke County on Tuesday, August 16, 2016

A woman was arrested in Burke County Wednesday after police said she struck and killed another woman with her vehicle then left the scene.

The investigation began Tuesday when officers got a call about a female lying in the roadway on Eldred Street SE near Pons Avenue SE in Valdese. When crews arrived, they found 51-year-old Stephanie Harris Tallent in critical condition.

Tallent was quickly taken to Carolinas Healthcare System's Valdese location where she was later pronounced deceased. Investigators determined Tallent had been the victim of a hit-and-run.

A tip from a citizen led police to naming 52-year-old Carolyn Huffman Stroup as a potential suspect.

Stroup was then questioned by officers and a warrant was issued for her arrest for misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Stroup was arrested on the charge and taken before a magistrate before being released on a written promise to appear in court on February 7, 2017.

No further information has been released.
