Morganton, NC : A Conover woman was killed in a wreck on Interstate 40 on Wednesday, January, 10th 2018

A Conover woman was killed in a wreck on Interstate 40 on Wednesday morning.

The wreck happened near Exit 118, said Trooper J.J. Byland with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Officials have not released the name of the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was driving a Toyota 4Runner in a westbound lane when she was ran off the road, overcorrected and started to spin. Witnesses said the woman was trying to avoid a truck that was cutting her off, according to Byland.

The woman then overturned in the median, hopped the guardrail and spun around into the eastbound lane, where the vehicle came to a stop, Byland said.

“I am very thankful the witnesses stayed around for this because this is pretty bad,” he said.

There were no other vehicles involved in the wreck, which still is being investigated. No charges have been released as of 11 a.m.

The truck driver pulled off Exit 118 and was speaking to troopers around 10:30 a.m. Around that same time, traffic was backed up about 3.5 miles.

Byland said highway patrol hopes to have the interstate lanes completely open by noon.

“This has been one of the most violent rollovers I have seen since I have been here in Burke County,” said Byland, who has been a trooper in the county for four years.

Icard Township Fire and Rescue, Burke County EMS, Burke County REACT and Highway Patrol from Catawba County also responded to the scene.
