Norfolk, VA : Hampton man dies in Spotsylvania crash on Wednesday morning, August 31, 2016

A Hampton man died in a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday morning.

Sgt. F. Les Tyler, Virginia State Police spokesperson, said shortly after 2:30 a.m. troopers were notified of a vehicle crash on Interstate 95 southbound at the 128.9 mile marker. Upon arrival, officers found two crashes.

The first crash was at the 128.9 mile marker and involved a van pulling a trailer loaded with five motorcycles. The van was traveling southbound when a tractor trailer rear-ended the van. The motorcycles the van was pulling were then ejected and blocked the roadway. Tyler said because of the roadway blockage, southbound traffic came to a stop and a second crash occurred in the midst of the back up at the 129.1 mile marker.

This crash involved three tractor trailers.

Two trailers, Tyler said, had stopped in the right lane when a 2015 international tractor trailer driven by Jonathan Demollow Saunders, 48, of Hampton, rear-ended a 2004 Freightliner tractor trailer driven by Orville Alberanga, 48, of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla. The force of the impact pushed the Freightliner into the rear of a 2012 Peterbuilt tractor trailer driven by Jeffery D. Weaver, 25, of Blain, Pa.

Saunders died at the scene as a result of injuries from the crash. Alberanga was taken to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment, Tyler said.

All southbound traffic was detoured until 8:30 a.m., Tyler said.
