Memphis, TN : 18-wheeler's shipping container overturned on I-55 southbound and 3rd Street on Tuesday 18th November 2014

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton was late to a town hall meeting in Binghampton because, in part, to a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Union Avenue and McLean Avenue. The mayor says he instructed his driver to stop and turn on his car's blue lights. "I'm better than my lieutenant," Wharton added. "I said, 'There's something in the street over there.'" A man had been hit, along with his shopping cart, while crossing the street around 7 p.m. The incident happened within sight of the Starbucks drive-thru. "I was like, 'Is that a person laying there?'" recalled Starbucks barista Lauren Rose. "The lady in the drive thru said, 'there's no person,' and I was like 'I'm pretty sure that's a person.'" Wharton says a nurse and other citizens were helping the man when he arrived. Officers and paramedics were soon on the scene. But, the driver that hit the man was nowhere to be found, according to police. Police say the driver of a black car kept driving westbound on Union. According to police, the victim was transported to Regional Medical Center in non-critical condition. Though the intersection was partially closed earlier Tuesday night, it is now open. As a former public defender, Wharton says there's no defense for leaving a scene. "Even if the pedestrian was crossing against the light," Wharton explained. "There's no excuse under Tennessee law for a hit and run." Source : Mayor A C Wharton responds to hit and run accident
