Saratoga, CA : San Jose woman killed and 15-year-old critically injured in a single-car crash on Highway 9 early Wednesday, August 3, 2016

An unlicensed driver surrendered to authorities hours after he fled the scene of a single-car crash on Highway 9 early Wednesday that killed a San Jose woman and left a pregnant 15-year-old critically injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Estephany Cabrera Montes, 18, was in the front passenger seat of an eastbound four-door 2014 Nissan that reportedly went over a cliff just before Redwood Gulch Road around 1:15 a.m. Officer Ross Lee said the vehicle went airborne before crashing into a tree about 30 feet from the roadway.

Responding CHP officers arrived on scene to find a gravely injured Cabrera Montes and the 15-year-old girl sitting on the road shoulder.

The driver fled the scene after eluding an extensive area search that included the use of infrared technology, Lee said. Cabrera Montes was pronounced dead at the scene, and the pregnant 15-year-old girl was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

About seven hours later, around 8:30 a.m., the purported driver contacted San Jose police to turn himself in, and he was handed over to the custody of the CHP, Lee said. The driver was identified as 29-year-old San Leandro resident Alex Eduardo Antunez Garcia.

Antunez Garcia was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, felony vehicular manslaughter and misdemeanor driving without a license. His case will be reviewed by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office, after which charges could be filed.

The three Nissan occupants -- Antunez Garcia, Cabrera Montes and the 15-year-old girl -- were reportedly sightseeing and traveling in a caravan of several vehicles when the crash occurred. At some point the other caravan members noticed the Nissan was no longer traveling with them and backtracked, finding the wreck.

Inside the car, authorities found a cell phone, papers and other items linked to the driver.

The highway was shut down in both directions for about four hours and reopened just after 5 a.m.
