Yuma, AZ : Driver injured in single-vehicle rollover accident near the City of Somerton on Wednesday evening, August 3, 2016

A 35-year-old man was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center Wednesday evening following a single-vehicle rollover accident near the City of Somerton.

According to Capt. Javier Hernandez of the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department, at approximately 5:41 p.m. firefighters responded to the area of Avenue D and County 15½ Street for a report of an accident involving a vehicle that had rolled over multiple times.

Hernandez said when firefighters arrived on scene they found a severely damaged Chevrolet Tahoe in an agriculture field with part of the vehicle in a small irrigation canal.

"It is not known how many times the vehicle rolled," Hernandez said. "After the driver left the roadway, he wound up on the opposite side of the irrigation canal."

The 35-year-old male, who had been wearing his seatbelt, was the only occupant of the vehicle. A bystander on scene stated that the driver, who had been headed south on Avenue D, was unconscious when she stopped to help after the accident.

Hernandez said the driver, who had regained consciousness by the time firefighters arrived on scene, stated that he might have had problems with his vehicle’s suspension, and that could be what caused him to lose control.

The driver was treated at the scene and transported by Somerton/Cocopah ambulance to YRMC with possible internal and head injuries.

The accident is under investigation by the Somerton Police Department.
