Woodland, WA : Confused chickens wander highway after I-5 crash on Monday afternoon, December 29, 2014

Authorities say a multiple vehicle collision on northbound Interstate 5 in southwest Washington snarled traffic and freed an estimated 50 to 60 chickens that were among hundreds being transported in crates on a tractor-trailer rig.

The Columbian reports that the crash caused a 10-mile backup Monday afternoon that lasted for several hours.

A poultry expert and handlers were sent to the crash site to help round up the loose chickens. Clark County Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Tim Dawdy says another tractor-trailer rig was sent to the North Fork Lewis River bridge near Woodland. The crated chickens were moved onto that truck.

Dawdy says diesel spilled from two commercial trucks in the crash so fire crews diked the bridge drains to keep the fuel from reaching the river.

The Washington state Ecology Department was notified about the spill, and state Transportation Department workers were sent to help with traffic control. The collision was cleared by about 7 p.m.
