Albuquerque,NM : Family files suit in APD crash that killed 6-year-old boy on January, Monday 22nd 2018

The family of a 6-year-old boy who died after an on-duty Albuquerque police officer responding to a possible assault slammed into his mother’s car has filed a lawsuit against both the officer and the city.

Officer Johnathan McDonnell was traveling nearly 80 mph to a call for help around 6 p.m. on a Monday in April when his cruiser collided with Antoinette Suina’s car as she turned left onto Indian School from southbound Eubank. Joel Anthony Mumaw, 6, later died in a local hospital. His 9-year-old sister suffered extensive injuries.

McDonnell had been disciplined in at least six driving-related incidents during his nine years with APD. Those include what internal police documents say were five preventable crashes and an unauthorized pursuit, which took place less than a year before the fatal wreck.
