Tangipahoa Parish, LA : Pedestrian hit by car and killed on U.S. 51 in Hammond early Thursday, August 4, 2016

A 45-year-old Independence woman died early Thursday (Aug. 4) when a car hit her as she walked along U.S. 51 in Hammond. Karen Rae Phillips was pronounced dead on the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish corner's office shortly after the 4:30 a.m. collision, Louisiana State Police said.

An initial investigation determined that Phillips was walking within the northbound lane of the highway when she was struck by a 2013 Dodge Challenger driven by Sharhonda Deane Burton, 34, of Independence. Phillips was thrown 100 feet from the initial point of impact, State Police said.

Burton was not injured and is not suspected to have been impaired at the time, police said. Blood samples have been obtained and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police crime laboratory for analysis.
