Investigators worked Sunday to identify five people killed late Saturday on U.S. 77 near Spur 91.

At 9:30 p.m., a 2001 Toyota 4Runner was headed south on U.S. 77 and traveled off the roadway on to the grass median, where it struck an embankment, said Sgt. Deon Cockrell, Department of Pulbic Safety public information officer.

The vehicle flipped over on its roof, caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames. The driver and all four passengers were killed and burned in the flames, he said.

"It rolled over and caught on fire when it crashed," he said.

Victoria Fire Department responded to the wreck and extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes.

Investigators have not yet released the ages, hometowns or genders of those killed.

Vehicle registration of the Toyota 4Runner did not appear to be local when checked through the DPS computer system at the scene, said Trooper Jesse Ray Chavana.

Cockrell said Sunday night that he had no new information to share on attempts to identify the victims.
