Newport News, VA : A 91-year-old woman died on Monday, July 17, 2017

A 91-year-old woman died Monday afternoon after her car struck a pickup truck, state police spokeswoman Michelle Anaya said in an emailed news release.

Clara Stafford, of Hayes, was driving a 1995 Ford F-150 pickup truck southbound on Route 17 about 1:20 p.m., Anaya said.She disregarded a traffic signal at the intersection of Powhatan Drive and hit the left side of a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, which was towing a large trailer with lawn equipment, Anaya said.

The Silverado, driven by Kathleen Mixon, of Gloucester, jackknifed with the trailer, she said.

Stafford, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was taken to the hospital where she later died, Anaya said.
