Frankfort, KY : Social media helped get information to stranded motorists after fiery crash on Wednesday, 17th August, 2016

Traffic was still backed up for miles Wednesday on I-64 after a deadly crash Tuesday evening.

Hundreds of motorists waited in their cars for hours as crews worked to get the blaze under control.

Some motorists parked and got out of their vehicles because traffic was at a standstill.

Motorist Hunter Raynes said he didn't know about the accident until it was too late to exit the interstate.

"I didn't get any alerts," Raynes said. "I think they need to let people know further ahead."

Carrie Bly with the West Virginia Department of Transportation said social media was a key tool to get the word out to people who were stuck in traffic for many hours. A WVDOT Safety Officer did a Facebook Live report that was viewed over 60,000 times.

To prepare for the possibility of spending hours in your car stuck in traffic keep water, non-perishable snacks and phone charger in your vehicle.
