An El Paso man was killed early Sunday morning near Fort Hancock after the driver of a vehicle he was in fell asleep, causing it to roll over several times, officials said.

Joel Miramontes, 46, was killed after the driver of a 2003 Nissan SUV allegedly fell asleep and left the roadway at about 3:45 a.m. on Interstate 10 West about six miles east of Fort Hancock, Texas Department of Public Safety officials said. The SUV then rolled over several times.

Miramontes, who was a passenger in the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The driver, 26-year-old Joshua Mendez, and passenger Angel Palomares-Rodriguez, 47, were taken to Del Sol Medical Center due to injuries they sustained in the wreck. Both were wearing seat belts, officials said.
