Ithaca, N.Y : 23-year-old Cortland man killed in a single-car crash on a Town of Cortlandville road on Sunday, January 1, 2017

A 23-year-old Cortland man was killed in a single-car crash New Year's Day on a Town of Cortlandville road, state police said.

Two other passengers were injured in the wreck Sunday, which happened at 11:24 p.m. on East River Road, according to troopers, who released details of the crash Wednesday.

Ryan D. Card was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. He was the driver of a 2001 Honda Civic that rolled over on its roof along the western shoulder of the road, according to troopers.

The Civic had failed to negotiate a curve in the road while traveling northbound, troopers said, and it went off the shoulder and struck some trees before rolling down an embankment.

Passengers Sheldon L. Clawson, 22, of Cortland, and Nikiah M. Hakes, 18, of Groton, were taken to Upstate Medical Center for injuries related to the crash. Both are in stable condition, troopers said Wednesday.

State police are investigating the crash.
