WICHITA, KS : 1 dead in crash SW of Wichita on Wednesday, 11th August 2021

The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the man killed in a two-vehicle crash that happened about 1 p.m. Wednesday on K-42 near Viola. Sixty-one-year-old Joseph S. Soza, of Wichita, died at the scene on K-42 near 87th Street South after his GMC Sierra pickup struck a semi truck.

The KHP said Soza’s pickup was westbound on K-42 when it crossed the center line for an unknown reason and entered the eastbound lanes. The semi driver attempted to avoid the pickup by moving to the right, the KHP report said. Soza’s pickup struck the semi on its left side.

The driver of the semi, a 50-year-old man from Fall River, was not seriously injured in the crash.

“There are rumble strips on the outside right shoulders and there is a solid rumble strip on the centerline of the roadway too to help try to prepare motorists if they’re off one side of the road or crossing the centerline there,” KHP Trooper Chad Crittenden said. “We don’t know why that vehicle was so far over the centerline.”
