Neighbors were shocked when the driver of a blue SUV rammed into a house Tuesday night."It was like the loudest crash I had ever heard," Des Moines resident Joy Bembenek said.

The teenage driver was trying to flee from police when he turned into a cul-de-sac.

"I run outside to see what's going on and there were already lights flashing in the cul-de-sac," Bembenek said.

According to police reports, officers saw the SUV driving erratically into a driveway just after 11 p.m. When they asked the driver for ID, he sped off down the street. The chase ended quickly after the SUV crashed into the house.

"I think it's like shock and awe. You don't expect something like that to happen where you live,” Bembenek said. “You just don't expect to see that. I was surprised. The police were already on the lawn and they were yelling at somebody to stop."

The homeowner was sleeping right above where the car crashed.

"It was hit so hard that items flew out of the cupboards in her kitchen," Bembenek said.

Bembenek said the homeowner is okay, but still shaken up.

"She thought that the house had been struck by lightning,” Bembenek said.

The driver ran and hid in the backyard, but officers found him a few minutes later with a bag of bullets in his pocket. No gun was found.

The passenger in the vehicle denied medical treatment.

The driver is charged with interference with official acts, driving without a license, and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police no longer name minor suspects in cases like this due to a recent change in Iowa state law.
