Mesa, AZ : A five-year-old girl was hit and killed when a woman driving a pickup truck ran a red light on Saturday, July 12, 2014

Police in Mesa say a 5-year-old girl is dead after she was hit by a pickup truck that ran a red light.

Authorities say Marlene Mendoza was riding a tricycle in the crosswalk with her parents Saturday around 8 p.m. when the truck struck her.

Mesa police spokesman Steve Berry says the driver, 43-year-old Maria De Los Angeles Castro Balderas, stopped immediately.

Berry says impairment doesn't seem to be a factor. He says it appears that Balderas failed to see the red light at a mid-block crossing.

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

No others were injured.

The accident occurred on Main Street, which was closed in both directions between Gilbert and Lindsey Roads for most of the night.
