Arkansas City,KS : Former Ark City resident dies in accident on April, saturday 22th 2017

Four people with Arkansas City ties were involved in a one-vehicle accident Saturday in Wisconsin. The crash left one woman dead and the other three injured.

The accident occurred at 5:37 p.m. on Wisconsin Highway 80, south of the town of Hazel Green in Grant County. Grant County is in the southwest corner of the state, close to the border with Iowa and Illinois.

Hollie (Spore) Kelley, 39, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Ark City, was driving northbound on Wisconsin Highway 80 when, for unknown reasons, her vehicle entered the east ditch and struck a culvert, according to the Wisconsin State Police.

Kelley died in the accident, while three passengers — her daughter, Martika Spore, 22, of Dubuque, formerly of Ark City; Tracie Anderson, 42, of Ark City; and Anderson’s son, Justice Anderson, 22, of Ark City — were injured.

Terri Anderson, Tracie’s mother and Justice’s grandmother, told the CT that mother and son were in Iowa visiting Kelley and Spore, who had recently moved to Dubuque.

Pam Spore, Hollie’s mother and Martika’s grandmother, had passed away three weeks ago, and they returned to Ark City for the memorial service. Tracie Anderson and Justice Anderson had planned to visit their friends in Dubuque.

Tracie has numerous broken bones, including a shattered pelvis that had to be reconstructed in a seven-hour surgery, but she is in stable condition, her mother said. She had another surgery Monday, which lasted five hours.

She remains in intensive care at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison and has been unconscious since the accident.

According to Tracie’s doctors, she will probably remain in the ICU for another week or two. After being released from ICU, she will remain in the hospital in Madison for another two or three weeks before being moved to a rehabilitation center in the area, where she will probably stay for several months.

Doctors have told Terri that it will probably be at least three months before her daughter can put any weight on her legs and up to a year before she is walking normally again.

Terrie said her grandson has broken ribs and a broken sternum and is in extreme pain, but he is improving. It hurts him to talk a lot, so he has mostly been in contact with his grandmother via text message, she said, although they have been able to speak on the phone a few times since the accident.

Martika sustained broken bones, including both arms. Both she and Justice are staying at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

For now, Justice plans to stay in the same hospital room as Martika, since she has lost both her mother and grandmother in a short time period and also because he is unable to be with his mother right now, said Terri.

Terri Anderson remains in Arkansas City caring for Tracie’s youngest son, who is still in school.

Even if she were in Madison, Terri said she would only be able to visit her daughter for 10 minutes every two hours, since she remains in ICU.

Terri talks with Tracie’s doctors and nurses frequently.

“They’re good about letting me call the nurses’ station whenever I want,” Terri said. She also posts frequent updates to her, Tracie’s and Justice’s Facebook pages.

A friend of Terri’s started a Go Fund Me page to help raise money for medical expenses and travel expenses, so Terri can visit Iowa and Wisconsin at a later date. The page address is www.gofundme.com/gb9v0c.

Since the accident, Terri said she has received supportive text messages from family and friends, and a few people have visited her.

She is getting through this by taking everything minute by minute.

“It’s all I can do,” she said.

Terri said it’s difficult not to be with her daughter, but she needs to be here to take care of her younger grandson. Once her daughter is out of the ICU, Terri said, she can start thinking more about what’ll happen in the future.
