PONTIAC, IL : Logan prison worker recuperating from crash on Saturday, 20th August, 2016

Friends and co-workers of a Logan Correctional Center officer are coming to his support as he recuperates from injuries suffered in an on-duty crash.

Scott Baxter had internal bleeding and broke his left leg, right foot and pelvis in two spots in an Aug. 11 crash that also injured five others. Illinois State Police say a 15-year-old girl from Taylorville was driving north on Illinois 29 near Edinburg when her SUV crossed the center line and hit the southbound Corrections Department van shortly after 8 a.m.

Baxter, a former McLean County jailer who lives in Pontiac, was transported to a Springfield hospital by helicopter. DOC Officer Amanda Vanostran, 23, and Logan inmate Winona Demain, 36, were treated at a Springfield hospital and later released.

The 15-year-old driver and her passengers, Lori Thomas, 48, of Taylorville, and an 11-year-old girl, also were treated at a Springfield hospital and later released.

Baxter is expected to be off work for several months, said Logan Correctional Lt. Eric McNamara, and his co-workers are finding ways to help.

“We went to his house and built a deck and a ramp for him because he is going to be in a wheelchair for a while,” he said. “He is a loving, caring guy and would give you the shirt off of his back. He was always there to help others and now it’s our turn to help him.”
