VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL : Volusia County woman killed during Hurricane Matthew, officials say on Thursday, 6th October 2016

A woman was killed in Volusia County during Hurricane Matthew, officials told WESH 2 News.

The woman was identified as Susan Mathes, 63, of Hazen Road in DeLand.

Mathes had noticed a lull in the storm and went outside to feed animals when a tree fell on top of her. Her husband drove her to a local hospital and she was later pronounced dead, WESH 2 News has learned.

It's the first known death in the United States as a result of Hurricane Matthew.
