A corrections officer is dead after police say he crashed into a stone subdivision entrance in Union County overnight. Highway Patrol says Corrections Officer William R. Womack Jr. smashed into the entrance sign of Willoughby Woods, on North Carolina Highway 84 near Monroe. Officials say Womack was going more than 100 miles an hour when the accident happen.
