Topeka, KS : 12-year-old critically injured in bike-car crash in East Topeka on Tuesday morning, August 2, 2016

A 12-year-old boy was critically injured when the bike he was riding collided with a car late Tuesday morning in the Highland Park neighborhood of East Topeka, authorities said.

The crash — which occurred at the bottom of a fairly steep hill — was reported at 11:57 a.m. at S.E. 17th and Maryland.

Topeka police officer Aaron Bulmer said the boy was riding his red bicycle west down a hill in the 800 block of S.E. 17th when he entered the intersection with S.E. Maryland without stopping. The boy hit a silver, four-door, 2006 Chevrolet Impala southbound on Maryland.

Police said the boy and hit the driver’s side of the car, denting both doors and breaking out windows from the car.

The boy suffered serious head and facial injuries and was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to Stormont Vail Hospital. His injuries were at first considered life-threatening.

However, police later said he was in serious but stable condition and was speaking with officers at the hospital while being treated for his injuries.

The male driver of the Chevy was uninjured, as was a girl in a child-safety seat in the back.

Broken glass from the impact did get in her seat, Bulmer said, but the girl wasn’t hurt.

Police said the brother of the injured bicyclist was riding his bike and had passed through the intersection moments before the crash.

The child’s mangled bicycle ended up near the left rear bumper of the Chevy and was taken from the scene by police.

Streets leading to the intersection were blocked for more than an hour as police investigated the crash. The intersection, a block west of S.E. 17th and Hudson, was reopened about 1:15 p.m.

The intersection at S.E. 17th and Maryland has no stop signs in any direction.
