A two-vehicle crash involving an ATV and a tractor-trailer claimed the life of a 15-year-old Skipperville boy on Tuesday.

According to a statement from state trooper Kevin Cook, a 15-year-old boy was seriously injured when the Honda ATV he was driving was struck by a 1991 Peterbilt commercial vehicle driven by Albert Lane, 55, of Gordon. The statement said the teenager was taken to Dale Medical Center in Ozark, where he was pronounced dead. Lane was not injured in the crash. The crash occurred on Dale County 333, also called Morgan Church Dirt Road, approximately five miles northeast of Echo.

Cook said, according to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency policy, they do not release the names of juveniles regardless of the circumstances.

Dale County Coroner Woody Hilboldt could not be reached for comment.
Announcers at the Dixie Majors World Series game held at Eagle Stadium in Ozark held a moment of silence before the game Tuesday. According to a Dothan Eagle sports reporter at the game, the announcers read the following at the game:

“The Skipperville and Ozark communities face a great loss today with the passing of Daniel Grantham in a tragic accident.

“Daniel was a sophomore at G.W. Long High School where he was loved by everyone. He was a valuable member of the G.W. Long football team and had been a great first baseman and slugger in Ozark’s baseball program since T-ball.

“Daniel played a big role as starting first baseman on Ozark’s 15U all-star team when it competed in the Dixie 15U World Series here at Eagle Stadium just two weeks ago.
“Daniel was also an avid hunter and fisherman and had a great love for the outdoors. Daniels was always respectful, compassionate and had a smile for everyone. Our prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates – and especially his parents, Ricky and June.”
