McDonough, GA : One killed in fiery crash on I-75 in Henry County on Thursday morning, September 1, 2016

Traffic along Interstate 75 north was tied up for hours Thursday morning due to a fatal fiery crash.

According to the Henry County Police Department, a tractor trailer was involved in an accident the early morning hours Thursday, causing congestion in the northbound lanes. As a result, another tractor trailer engaged its hazard flashers as it was stopped in the backup near mile marker 212, near the Hampton-Locust Grove exit. Just before 4:30 a.m., the driver of a black Chevrolet Malibu registered out of Monroe County was apparently unaware that traffic had stopped and rear-ended the tractor trailer, according to police.

“This resulted in a fire, which resulted in the fatality,” reported Capt. Joey Smith with Henry County police.

The crash forced I-75 to be shut down for several hours, impacting morning commuters.

Smith stated that all lanes were open as of 8 a.m.; however, traffic congestion was still heavy.

Police have not released the identity of the driver killed in the crash pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.
