Ocala, FL : Christian musician Dallas Taylor critically injured in ATV crash in Morriston on Tuesday, August 2, 2016

An influential Christian musician and Ocala native remains hospitalized a day after he was critically injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident on Tuesday.

Dallas Taylor, a founding member of Christian metalcore band Underoath, is the current lead singer of southern heavy metal band Maylene and the Sons of Disaster.

On Tuesday, Taylor, 36, was operating a 1999 Honda Foreman on the West Marion Baptist Church property at 6001 NW 135th Ave. in Morriston. Just after 6 p.m., he drove up an embankment, lost control and struck a sign. The ATV came to rest on top of Taylor. He was not wearing a helmet, according to FHP reports.

He was flown by helicopter to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

Dottie Taylor, his mother, said doctors brought him out of sedation briefly on Wednesday to perform neurological tests.

“He looked right at me and his sister. They had him move his feet and he wiggled his finger,” Dottie Taylor said.

His most serious injuries include a small brain bleed and a clot in his carotid artery. Doctors cannot give him blood thinners to break up the clot because it could worsen the bleeding in his brain.

“The clot is what is worrying the the most right now. They are just keeping an eye on it to make sure it doesn’t move,” she said.

She said Dallas and his 10-year-old son were visiting from Birmingham, Alabama, and arrived on Sunday. On Tuesday, he decided to take a spin on the ATV and was riding alone.

“We didn't even know he’d taken it. He went across the street. He didn’t wear a helmet,” Dottie Taylor said.

Underoath was founded in Ocala by Taylor and Luke Morton in 1997 and subsequently moved to Tampa. Taylor left Underoath in 2003 and in 2005 helped found Maylene and the Sons of Disaster in Birmingham, Alabama. The band has released four albums and was working on a fifth.

Late Wednesday afternoon, a post on the band’s Facebook page gave an update on Taylor’s condition.

“Dallas is making basic touch responses like hand squeezing and slight movement. He is not awake, but is showing signs of improvement. They have been running neurological tests and he is set to go into surgery this afternoon to repair the multiple broken bones in his arm,” the post stated.

A few hours after the accident, his brother, Rhett Taylor, posted on Facebook that Dallas had suffered multiple fractures, internal bleeding and head injuries.

“They said he'll be in the hospital for quite a while,” Rhett Taylor wrote.

Dottie Taylor said that since the accident, she has been amazed by the outpouring of support from Taylor’s fans.

“It’s amazing the outpouring from people who know him and love him,” she said.
