LOS LUNAS, NM : Los Lunas man dies in multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday, November, 22nd 2017

A Los Lunas man is dead after fleeing from local law enforcement during a traffic stop last week.

Around 9 p.m., Thursday, Nov, a Los Lunas officer stopped a Nissan passenger car with two people in it near the intersection of Main Street and N.M. 314 in Los Lunas. The driver, later identified as 29-year-old Roberto Quinonez Gonzales, of Los Lunas, fled east on Main Street, driving directly past a New Mexico State Police officer.

“The state police officer pursued the vehicle ... for approximately one-half mile east on Main Street when the Nissan ran a red light and struck another vehicle at the intersection of Main Street and Carson Drive,” said Lt. Elizabeth Armijo, public information officer for the New Mexico State Police, in a press release.

The vehicle struck by Gonzales’ Nissan was making a turn from Carson going east onto Main Street. The car hit a third vehicle that was stopped at the traffic light westbound on Main, Armijo said.

The crash disabled Gonzales’ vehicle, which came to a stop near the intersection.

“The vehicle sustained heavy damage from the collision and the fleeing driver (Gonzales) sustained fatal injuries in the crash,” Armijo said. “A female passenger in the fleeing vehicle sustained injuries in the collision and was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she remains in critical but stable condition.”

One other driver involved in the crash was transported to the hospital for minor injuries, and was later released in stable condition. No other injuries were reported, according to the press release.

At the time of the crash, Gonzales had a revoked driver’s license and was wanted on stolen vehicle charges, Armijo said.

The investigation of the crash is ongoing by the NMSP crash reconstruction unit.
