State police say a 27-year-old upstate New York man is dead after his car was involved in a three-vehicle chain-reaction crash on a highway outside Binghamton.

Troopers say a 37-year-old man from New York City was driving a tractor-trailer north on Interstate 81 around 4:40 a.m. Thursday when he rear-ended a car being driven by Kyle Shaffer in the town of Kirkwood.

The impact caused Shaffer's car to hit the back of a van driven by a woman from Fort Edward, New York.

Troopers say Shaffer was pronounced dead at the scene. He was from nearby Endicott.

Police say their investigation into the crash is continuing.
