Defiance, OH : Two people killed in separate crashes in Putnam County on Friday, 26th August, 2016

Two people were killed in separate crashes Friday in Putnam County.

According to the Lima post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, a crash occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Ohio 15 in Monroe Township when a 2012 Cadillac SUV driven by Teddy McCoy, 43, Kalida, turned into the path of a southbound 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Jeremy Larson, 42, Ottawa, causing a collision.

Larson was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers report that Larson was not wearing an approved helmet at the time of the crash.

McCoy and his passenger, Karen McCoy, 45, Kalida, were both transported to St. Rita’s Ambulatory Care Center, Glandorf, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

Ohio 15 was closed for approximately two hours. The Putnam County Prosecutor’s Office will review the crash, which remains under investigation, to determine if any charges will be filed.

Assisting at that scene were the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Putnam County Coroner’s Office, Putnam County EMS and Continental Fire Department.

A second fatal crash occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Ohio 108 in Palmer Township. According to the patrol, a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Fidencio Martinez-Trejo, 25, Cincinnati, was southbound traveling a rate of speed faster than the posted limit. His vehicle traveled over a railroad grade crossing and went airborne. The vehicle then traveled off the left side of the road. Troopers report that Martinez-Trejo overcorrected the vehicle causing the vehicle to overturn and strike a utility pole and tree before coming to rest in a field. Martinez-Trejo died as a result of the crash.

According to troopers, he was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash; however, alcohol is a suspected factor.

The route was closed for approximately two hours during the initial investigation. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Continental and Leipsic EMS and Miller City and Ottawa fire departments assisted at the scene.
