Rehoboth, DE : 33-year-old Millsboro man was killed in a motorcycle crash on Tuesday, June 13, 2017

A 33-year-old Millsboro man was killed in a motorcycle crash on U.S. Route 13 north of Bridgeville June 13.

The crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. when the 33-year-old was driving a 1986 Honda Shadow motorcycle north on Route 13 in the right lane heading toward the intersection of East Newton Road and failed to stop at a red light, said Sgt. Richard Bratz of Delaware State Police.

Rosedale, Md., resident Michael D. Sauerwein, 42, was driving a 2009 Chrysler Sebring west on East Newton Road when the motorcyclist ran the light and drove directly into his path.

Bratz said the front of the motorcycle hit the front left of the Sebring. The motorcyclist was thrown onto the roadway and Sauerwein stopped his vehicle in the middle of the intersection.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet, Bratz said, and was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld pending family notification.

Sauerwein, who was wearing a seatbelt, was uninjured.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues an investigation. The intersection of Route 13 and East Newton Road was closed for about 2.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
