Yolo,CA : Six dead in Yolo County head-on crash on January, Sunday 7th 2018

Six people are dead following a fiery head-on collision on Interstate 5 near the town of Yolo that California Highway Patrol investigators are blaming on a wrong-way driver.

Five of the victims, three females and two males, were in a northbound Dodge Avenger that was hit by a southbound Chevrolet Equinox traveling in the wrong direction shortly after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to CHP Officer Rodney Fitzhugh.

Their names, ages and hometowns have not been released. Fitzhugh said later Sunday that none of the victims appeared to be children.

The Chevrolet’s driver, a female North Highlands resident whose name also hasn’t been released, also died.

Fitzhugh said officers were alerted to the wrong-way driver just minutes earlier by other motorists traveling on I-5 near County Road 17, north of Woodland.

While officers were responding to the scene, dispatch advised the officers of a traffic collision in the same area. Upon the officers arrival they located a two-vehicle traffic collision,” Fitzhugh said in a news release.

“Following the collision both vehicles became engulfed in flames. As a result of the collision the solo occupant of the Chevrolet and five occupants within the Dodge succumbed to their injuries at the collision scene.”

The circumstances of the crash remains under investigation, including the possible role of alcohol or drugs, Fitzhugh said. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Woodland CHP office at 530-662-4685.
