Mother dead and her daughter critically injured in crash near McGinnis Pond Road

State Police are investigating a crash that left a Kent County mother dead and her daughter critically injured Friday night.

Police say Tricia Martin's car ran off the westbound side of Barratts Chapel Road near McGinnis Pond Road around 10:45, traveling along a ditch before hitting a phone box, a fence and an embankment and ending up back on the road.

Martin's 10-year-old daughter Taryn got out of the car and was asking the occupants of a stopped car for help when an SUV slammed into Martin's car and ejected her.

Taryn Martin was hit by one of the vehicles and thrown to the ground.

Taryn's mother was pronounced dead at Christiana Hospital.

Taryn is in critical condition at AI DuPont Children's Hospital, and the SUV driver is at Kent General with injuries police say aren't life-threatening.
