Corning, CA : 81-year-old Shasta Lake City woman was killed in a head-on collision on Monday, October, 30th 2017

An 81-year-old Shasta Lake City woman was killed in a head-on collision just before 8 p.m. Monday, involving a wrong-way driver heading south on northbound Interstate 5 near South Avenue, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.

The name of the woman is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Redding CHP dispatch center was notified at 7:52 p.m. Monday by multiple 9-1-1 calls regarding the wrong-way driver, identified in the release as Karen Rojas, 57, of Corning.

Red Bluff CHP officers were dispatched and at 7:54 p.m. calls were received while officers were en route that there had been a collision.

Officers arrived on scene about 8 p.m. and Rojas and the Shasta Lake woman, who both had major injuries, were trapped in their vehicles. Traffic was blocked on the northbound side for about an hour, according to the release.

The southbound lanes were closed for about half an hour to help with the landing of a helicopter. The Shasta Lake woman was flown to Enloe Medical Center in Chico where she died from her injuries.

Rojas, who was determined by officers to be under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident according to the release, was taken to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff before being transferred to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacaramento.

She was placed under arrest on charges of driving under the influences of drugs causing injury to another and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Due to Rojas injuries, she was temporarily released from custody to be treated, according to the release.

The collision is still under investigation and anyone who witnessed it or has information is asked to call Red Bluff CHP at 527-2034.
