Concord, NH : Cyclist killed in Wilton accident on April, Sunday 2nd 2017

A Bedford bicyclist was killed Sunday after being struck by a car on Route 31 in Wilton.

At approximately 3:03 p.m., the Wilton police responded to a motor vehicle crash on Route 31 at the intersection of Burton Highway, according to a press release issued by the N.H. State Police on Sunday. Albert S. Dodge III, 24, of Wilton, was traveling north in a 2006 Subaru Impreza and attempted to make a left-handed turn onto Burton Highway.

At the same time, Jeremiah Fitzgibbon, 60, of Bedford, was biking south in the brakedown lane of Route 31. According to state police, “for unknown reasons” Dodge failed to see Fitzgibbon, ultimately crossing into his path and striking him.

“My officer was first on the scene, and I responded out to assist him,” said Wilton Police Chief Brent Hautanen. “Immediately, we recognized the seriousness of the scene and we asked the state investigation team to step in.”

As a result of this collision, Fitzgibbon suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center by ambulance, where he later succumbed to those injuries, according to police.

Fitzgibbon was an avid triathlete, and competed both locally and abroad, according to Facebook posts.

The portion of the road where the crash occurred was closed for several hours.

Wilton police, Wilton Fire and Rescue, EMS crews and N.H. Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.

At this time, the crash is being investigated by the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit. Anyone that may have further information related to this crash is encouraged to contact Trooper Michael McLaughlin at 223-4381 or by email at michael.mclaughlin@dos.nh.gov.
