Upper Macungie Township, PA : Fatal crash closes Route 222 near Maxatawny on Thursday, 11th August, 2016

A Berks County man was killed in a crash that closed a stretch of Route 222 near the border between Berks and Lehigh counties for several hours Thursday morning. The accident happened around 3 a.m., in Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County, about a mile north of the village of Maxatawny.

Bradley S. Mayer, 23, of Spring Township, was driving south on Route 222, toward Berks County, when his car crossed into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer. Mayer's vehicle ended up in a cornfield with him being trapped inside, police said. First responders freed Mayer and rushed him to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, where he died shortly after 6:30 a.m., according to the coroner. Police have not released any information about the tractor trailer driver. Route 222 was closed in both directions for almost seven hours.
