ELKTON, MD : An Elkton man was killed on Wednesday, October 4, 2017

An Elkton man was killed on Wednesday night when the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a sport utility vehicle on a highway near Elkton, according to Maryland State Police.

Investigators released the name of the victim on Thursday night, identifying him as Todd Green, 52. Green was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred on West Pulaski Highway (U.S. Route 40) near Old Elk Neck Road.

Green was operating a motorcycle in the eastbound lane of Route 40 about 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, when the driver of a westbound SUV — Samantha Stanley, 18, also of Elkton — attempted to make a left turn onto Old Elk Neck Road, police said. When that SUV entered the eastbound lane of Route 40, police added, it cut into the path of the motorcycle.

The motorcycle crashed into the front passenger side of the SUV, which, in addition to Stanley, was occupied by four passengers, according to police. After the collision, the motorcycle careened off the right side of the highway and struck a stop sign, police said, adding that Green came to rest a few feet away.

An ambulance transported one of the SUV passengers to Union Hospital in Elkton for precautionary reasons, police reported.

Emergency workers closed a section of eastbound Route 40 for approximately three hours, detouring traffic a short distance west of Old Elk Neck Road while an MSP Accident Reconstruction Team conducted its on-scene investigation. That section of highway reopened shortly after 10 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing.

This marks the 23rd person killed in a Cecil County traffic accident thus far in 2017, continuing to increase a five-year high, according to Cecil Whig records.

It also marks the second fatal traffic accident in this county in six days, both of which occurred near Elkton and both of which involved a motorcyclist who was killed. On Sept. 28, a Perryville man, John Fitzgerald Smith, 55, was killed when the 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle he was riding on Star Route, north of Elkton, veered off the left side of the road as he negotiated a curve and crashed into a utility pole, police reported.
